In case you have the appointment with your dentist or have indulged your taste buds in eating something too sticky or sugary, then it’s time that you should undergo dental cleaning. Dental Cleaning is a procedure where in your dental professional will be cleaning your gums and periodontal disease.

This helps in wiping out any sort of bacterial infection that is present in your gums because generally patients do not visit their dentist for as long as six months. This gives birth to bacteria and germs which results in tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems. So today we will be talking about the ideal time to go for deep cleaning or dental cleaning.

When you visit your dentist for dental cleaning, they will use an instrument called as probe. This instrument measures the area surrounding your teeth and helps in gauging whether there are any sorts of pockets. Pocket is an area which falls between teeth and gums where bacteria might grow. If the depth of gum tissue between teeth and gums is more than 5 millimeters it will be called as pockets. As per international dental standards it is imperative that every individual especially adults should go for periodontal evaluation every year. This helps in determining whether the patient would need any further treatment or not. Do not be surprised if your dentist is measuring pocket as this is a part of the entire and detailed dental treatment procedure.

In an ideal healthy gum the pocket should not be more than 3 millimeters deep. In conditions where the pockets are 5 mm deep your dentist will recommend procedures such as dental cleaning, root planing and deep scaling.

Dental Cleaning is typically called as deep cleaning, scaling and root planing. While scaling involves plaque and tartar removal from the surface of the teeth and from pocket areas between teeth and gums, the root planing help in scrapping off plaque and tartar from the surface of the root of the tooth. Both the procedures will be performed by a dental hygienist who will be using an electric or ultrasonic instruments or manual scaling tools. You must also be known to the fact that both the procedures will require at least two visits and you might have to visit again. The second visit is a follow-up to check that your gums and teeth are getting healthier with no pockets.

Dental Cleaning, although a worthy oral treatment procedure, is still dreaded by a lot of people. The main reason is because of the use of different tools and equipments which help in the cleaning procedure. However the truth is entirely different. The procedure is seamless, simple and painless. It is therefore important for you to understand the entire steps involved in it. As mentioned before your dental hygienist will carry out an exam to determine the length of pocket. Once that has been determined they will work towards the cleaning of plaque and tartar with the help of a scalar. Do not be scared when you hear he scrapping sound as this is absolutely normal. After the scrapping is done, coarse toothpaste will be used and your teeth will be brushed using a high power electric toothbrush. This is done so that any leftover plaque or tartar can be removed.

The next step in this dental cleaning procedure is flossing your teeth. This helps in removal of plaque, tartar and toothpaste which might have been missed even after brushing your tooth. Thereafter you will rinse your mouth thoroughly to get away with any debris. The rinse will contain fluoride. The last step in dental cleaning is to protect the enamel of your teeth and for that you will be given fluoride treatment. This helps in fighting against cavities.

Once the entire procedure is over it is important for you to take care of your teeth. Dental cleaning at home should be carried out regularly. The steps are pretty straight forward as you’ll have to make certain that you simply brush, floss and use mouthwash to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
